Weil die schöne Sennerin Maria ihre Tiere alle gesund von der Alm zurück ins Tal gebracht hat, nimmt sie zum Dank an einer Wallfahrt nach Maria Kranz teil. Auf ihrem Weg dorthin kommt sie nach Kirchberg, wo Maria in der Scheune des Pfarrers nächtigen darf. Dort wird sie zufällig vom Großbauernsohn Franz entdeckt, der sich sofort in das Mädchen verliebt.
