Historia dzieje się tuż przed atakiem na Pearl Habour i przeplata się w niej kilka wątków, a bohaterami powieści są żołnierze zawodowi i kontraktowi. Jest tam romans młodego żołnierza z żoną komendanta, jest też historia zbuntowanego żołnierza, który naraża się okrutnemu przełożonemu. Nie warto przytaczać jednak całej historii, w końcu mamy film i książkę.
