مسلسل "توبة" مقتبسة من فيلم "المشبوه" الذي قدمه المخرج سمير سيف عام 1980 من بطولة عادل إمام وسعاد حسني وفاروق الفيشاوي وسعيد صالح. ودارت أحداث الفيلم حول لص وفتاة ليل تجمعهما الظروف في أحدى الشقق، ومع وصول الشرطة يتسبب اللص في إصابة أحد الضباط، ويهرب مع الفتاة ويقرران الزواج والتوبة، ويدخل اللص إلى السجن ليقضي عقوبته، ليخرج ويجد نفسه أمام مشاكل كبيرة تقف حائلا أمام محاولته للتوبة.
